On behalf of Equal People Organization, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to both North Carolina Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan for their votes to end the military's "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" (DADT) policy.
Since its implementation in 1994, more than 13,500 gay and lesbian soldiers were discharged under this discriminatory policy. Earlier this year, Equal People Organization worked with local volunteers in the “Stand with Honor” Campaign to collect toy soldiers representing these brave American's who were denied a chance to serve their country. 13,500 toy soldiers along with hundreds of personalized post-cards and letters were hand delivered to both Senators Burr and Hagan calling for an end to this policy of legalized discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) service members. On December 18th, 2010, Senators Burr and Hagan made it clear that they would no longer stand for DADT’s message of prejudice and discrimination with their votes to repeal the policy. We applaud both North Carolina Senators for their votes – especially Senator Burr who crossed party lines along with seven other Republicans to vote for what was right instead of politically expedient. This legislation delivers a strong message of equality for LGBT service members across the country. These brave men and women will now be able to serve their country side-by-side with their heterosexual counterparts. Throughout the “Stand with Honor” campaign, thousands of you donated soldiers and wrote letters encouraging Senators Burr and Hagan to work to end this policy. Now that they have, please take a moment to thank them for listening to you.
Call, write, or e-mail the offices of Senators Burr and Hagan to say THANK YOU for helping to finally end the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and taking a significant step toward the fair and just treatment of all people.
